Fire safety

On Tuesday, my friend Melanie and I took Ainsley and Melanie's children ~ Samantha and Jackson ~ to a "fire safety" storytime at a local bookstore.

A firefighter was on hand to read a story,
show what firefighters wear
and show how to call "911".
The firefighter also let the children try on firefighter's gear
and also told the children what to do if there is a fire.

Here is what Ainsley remembers about fire safety:
1) If your clothes catch on fire: stop, drop, cover your face and roll!
2) If the doorknob is hot, climb out the window.
3) Smoke detectors sound an alarm when there is a fire.
4) If a fireman is trying to find you, don't hide. Yell "I'm over here!"
5) Firefighters wear heavy gear.
6) Call "911" if there is a fire.
7) Firefighters are our friends.

(I love that she remembered that last one!)

Turtle

Look what Ainsley and I found in our front yard!
Yes. That's a turtle. I couldn't believe how big it was!
Ainsley enjoyed watching him....although he didn't move a lot.
After 20 minutes or so, he finally made a break for it and moved on over to our neighbor's yard.
Ahhh! The joys of living in the "country".

Griffin

Our dear friends, William and Robin, are now the very proud parents of baby boy Griffin.
He was born yesterday. (The best Father's Day gift for William.)

What a sweet, sweet boy Griffin is. We are so happy he is here!

Cupcakes

For Ainsley's birthday, one of her friends (Audrey) gave her the cutest "cupcake" kit...complete with cupcake mix, frosting, and sprinkles. (There was even a hat for Ainsley to wear while she was baking.)
Here's Chef Ainsley...ready to make the cupcakes!
Cracking the eggs to add to the batter.

The best part of baking? Licking the beaters!

Cupcakes complete! And did they taste YUMMY!

ABR: Diary of a Worm

Ainsley loves to read. Since books are such an important part of her life, I thought I would post some of her favorites and let her give a "review" of each book in her own words. (If you are like me, you are always on the outlook for good children's books.) This is her second review.

The book Ainsley is reviewing today is "Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin. We checked this book out from the library. The first time I read it to Ainsley, we were both lauging so hard. (Dan thought it was very funny, too.) The book takes the reader through the daily life of a worm...from his perspective.

Ainsley's Book Review (ABR): "Diary of a Worm" by Doreen Cronin.

Me: What is the story about?
Ainsley: A funny worm.

Me: What was your favorite part of the book?
Ainsley: When the worm says, "Must make tunnel. Help Earth breathe!"

Me: What was your favorite character in the book?
Ainsley: The grandpa worm. Because he is funny when he sleeps.

Me: Do you think other children would like the book? Why?
Ainsley: Yes. Because it is funny and the worm has a cute smile.

Click here for more information about the book.

(As a side note: When I was looking on Amazon for the book...so I could give a link...Ainsley and I noticed there are two other "diary" books by the same author. "Diary of a Spider" and "Diary of a Fly". We'll definitely be looking for these books, too.)

Thankful for the little things

One thing I love about Ainsley is she truly has a childlike faith.

This morning, we were talking about the thunderstorms we had last night after she had gone to bed. (a lot of rain and a lot of thunder)

I asked Ainsley if she was afraid and she replied:

"No, Mama. I just prayed to God to thank him for roofs. It is nice that he gave us roofs because if he didn't, we would have gotten very wet."

What a sweet reply and wonderful example of being thankful for the little things in our lives.

I might regret this...BUT...

...I HAVE to say...
I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THE CUBBIES!!!!!!
I tend to jinx my favorite teams when they are doing well and I am SURE they are going to win it all.
The Cubs do look great this year and are playing the best they have since 1908.
That's right.
1908...100 years ago.
I'll take it one game at a time and try not to look ahead to October...although it is very hard not to.
GO CUBS!
